They cleaned up the trash in the river Parsęta

12.05.2008 13:04:00

‘’You are great, because you want to do it!’ Jacek Bożek, the leader of the ecological Club Gaia, was accompanied by applause.

A moment later, several hundred people taking part in the Great Cleaning of the Parsęta got to work.

When we first organised the great cleaning, I thought, "What happens if no people come? What happens if they come and there is not enough trash?"' Jan Wołejszo, president of Troton from Ząbrowo near Gościn, recalled on Saturday. Fortunately, there were more than enough people and, less fortunately - trash. Also three years ago, together with Club Gaia, the company invited local governments and non-governmental organizations to sign an agreement and symbolically adopt the river. Now, the company producing paints organised an action of cleaning the river for the third time.

On Saturday, armed with gloves and bags, the people collected two trailers of trash. On the banks of Parsęta, from Ząbrowo to Bardy, they found bottles, scrap metal, cans, plastic bags and even a car bumper. For the first time, employees of Troton, their families, and colleagues from other companies, were joined in great numbers by the inhabitants of Ząbrowo, Pustary and the surrounding villages. 'We walked about three kilometres and collected full bags of trash,' Jadwiga Osada, Leokadia Olszak and Teresa Istoczak from Ząbrowo told us proudly. All of them, almost septuagenarians, argued that trash near the Parsęta is not only the locals' doing. A strong cleaning group was made up of children from the Primary School in Robuń.
The prize for cleaning was a feast, a shanty concert given by Przemysław Mordalski and a meeting with traveller Romuald Koperski. He is the hero of the Expedition of the Century, during which he traversed the entire Eurasian continent. His car, Man Kat III, was the first mechanical vehicle to conquer the Northern Siberian wilderness, ice-bound by deathly freeze. The resistance of his car's body to the cold, exceeding minus 60 degrees, was taken care of by Troton.
